Beauty Shopping Rules: What to Buy Exactly What You Want

After over a decade of makeup shopping we do learn some of the tricks of the trade of what to buy and when to buy it.

1. Always decide what you want to get before you leave the house, by arriving at the counters with no specific idea in mind, you’ll end up buying things you don’t want and end up regretting, in these days we clearly should try and avoid buyers remorse.

2. Research online all types of opinions about the product you have in mind, if you don’t have an idea, the research the product type to figure which one you should give a go. Also remember that no matter the hype surrounding a product, an illuminator is not a concealer, nor is a shimmery bronzer a suitable product to contour, always buy a product that suits your needs otherwise you might be disappointed with the product’s performance when in fact your using it wrong.

3. Taste is not uniform, so a salesperson’s taste might not be yours, if you don’t like the product that is being shown to you then don’t buy because the salesperson loves it. After you get home you won’t like the final result and it will end up in your makeup graveyard.

4. Bear in mind your skin type and it’s specific needs, don’t buy a foundation that gives you a satiny or dewy finish if you have combination or oily skin, you’ll end up hating the “greasy” feel midday and mumble that the product sucks.

5. Despite the fact that we are bombarded with numerous makeup steps to achieve the perfect makeup, sit for five minutes and wonder if you really need a serum, a moisturizer, a foundation primer, and eyeshadow primer, an under eye concealer, a skin tone corrector, a skin toned concealer, foundation, powder, bronzer, contouring, blusher, illuminator, 5 shades of eyeshadow on your lids, a mascara primer, a mascara, gel eyeliner, pencil eyeliner, some false lashes, a lip balm, a lip primer, lip pencil, lipstick and lip gloss? Is it doable for your everyday routine before you get to work? You can have all these steps for a special occasion, less is more and not only you gain time every morning, your skin will thank you because you don’t saturate it continuously with a never ending amount of products. Makeup and skin care have evolved since the days of pancake and Vaseline but less is more.

6. Always have in mind what you already on versus the current trend, if neutrals are back with a vengeance, do you need another pallet of neutral shades when the one you have at home is almost exactly the same? If you don’t buy replicas of what you already own, you’ll have more in your object to splurge on a more expensive item like a very good makeup brush which will last you a good while.

7. Have a realistic budget and stick to it, temptation abounds in makeup stands with the pretty colors but if you buy your makeup wisely you will end up a you-coordinated collection and you’ll always be pleased with whatever you want, makeup is, after all, about you and no one else.
