While there are still two more days until we ring in 2014, we thought we’d take a stab at predicting next year’s trendsetters. For a hint to the It Girls of 2014, let’s take a second to look back to some key style moments of 2013, which was a really good year in fashion, right? From jet-setting travel chic to quintessential SoCal charm, we had style icons in spades—but with a new year right around the corner, we think that these sartorially skilled superstars are bound to wear the crown of Glamour Style Icon of the Week in 2014. Let’s take a look:
Lupita Nyong’o in J. Mendel at the Hollywood Film Awards and Christopher Kane at the London premiere of 12 Years a Slave
It’s hard to say which one of us is more obsessed with breakout movie (and red carpet) star Lupita Nyong’o. Back in September, Nikki rounded up her stellar outfits from her 12 Years a Slave photo ops, and I’ve drooled over quite a few of her outfits. One thing we can be sure of, the Golden Globe nominee for best actress will definitely be on our best-dressed roundup from the January 12 ceremony. We can’t wait to see her dress!
While 2013 was the year of Royal Baby Watch (hey there, Prince George), 2014 will bring on Royal Engagement Watch, with all eyes on hunky Prince Harry’s girlfriend and speculated future fiancée Cressida Bonas. (SOB.) A contrast from maybe future sister-in-law Duchess Kate Middleton, the blue-blooded beauty rocks a boho-cool, Cara Delevingne sort of swagger. And instead of tiaras or fascinators, she wears music-festival-ready floral crowns to fancy-pants wedding ceremonies instead. (Love the Stella McCartney printed dress peeking out from the black jacket too.)
Shailene Woodley in Calvin Klein Collection at the Gotham Awards and Proenza Schouler at the premiere of The Spectacular Now
The 22-year-old Shailene Woodley is one to watch in 2014—not just for her much buzzed-about roles in the tearjerker The Fault in Our Stars and the YA movie Divergent but also for her star showing on the red carpet. The Oscar nominee has a knack for choosing classic silhouettes but with an edgy, youthful twist. We can’t wait to see what she has in store for this year. Love the pixie cut too.
Lily Collins in Julien Macdonald at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards and Louis Vuitton at Paris Fashion Week in February
Breakout actress Lily Collins isn’t just constantly making our best-dressed lists; the designers are in love with her too. From Chanel (you have to watch her ride the mechanical bull at the house’s fabulous runway show extravaganza in Dallas) to up-and-coming labels like Houghton, everyone has Lily Collins on their radar.
Harley Viera-Newton in Giorgio Armani at the One Night Only event and Louis Vuitton at the Whitney Gala
While DJ and It Girl Harley Viera-Newton has an enviable vintage dress collection, she has a knack for rocking an off-the-runway designer dress with her own cool-girl twist too. Whether she’s spinning behind the decks or attending a fashion and celeb-filled party, she always looks to-die-for (even in a cozy, comfy sweater). Harley even has fashion icon Diane von Furstenberg’s seal of approval—she designed an adorable cat-themed clutch for the fashion icon’s label.
Lena Dunham in Erdem at the Met Gala and Zac Posen at the Golden Globes
Along with possessing terrifying artistic talents (seriously, have you watched Tiny Furniture yet?), Lena Dunham boasts some serious fashion street cred too. (Even if sometimes she’s not wearing any clothes in her TV series, Girls.) The coolest, most designer-y of designers (Erdem, Saint Laurent…) dress the writer/filmmaker/director/actress for the red carpet, New York-designer designer Rachel Antonoff is a good friend (Lena’s boyfriend is Rachel’s bro Jack, who you may know from the band fun.), and, in the ultimate of ultimate fashion connections, family friend Zac Posen used to babysit her. Plus, have you seen how fah-bulous the new season-three Girls promo looks?!
With parents like fashion obsessives Kanye West and Kim Kardashian little baby North West has style in her genes. Considering the seven-month-old’s starter wardrobe, which includes so much custom designer gear—like these adorable Stella McCartney pieces—a Style Icon honor is definitely in the works for 2024 and beyond. Watch out, world.
