We’ve got official confirmation that being a Kardashian isn’t always the best thing in the world (gigantic engagement rings notwithstanding). Model-of-the-moment Kendall Jenner is spilling to Love on how her family’s fame actually kind of hurt her. “People think this just came to me. But it didn’t. What I have has almost worked against me,” she told the magazine, per British Vogue. “I had to work even harder to get where I wanted because people didn’t take me seriously as a model because of the TV show.”
I have no real experience with the special types of challenges that come from being with a well-known family (and I’m sure there are some big ones). But with the super-speedy rise of Kendall’s modeling career, as if it came straight from a rocket launch pad, how much trouble could she have had?
First, there was the Marc Jacobs show in February 2014.
Then her Instagram shot with Vogue, where she modeled straight-from-the-runway looks and shot some selfies herself to send to the klan (25 in just over 2 minutes, per the magazine).
She went transatlantic for her first Fashion Week, walking in Givenchy.
And took a stroll through Chanel’s mega supermarket at its show too.
Back to social media, where this May she teased an upcoming Vogue Paris shoot.
In June, Givenchy announced her as one of the faces of its fall campaign.
She had her second Chanel appearance at its couture show this July.
Keep in mind that while all of these career milestones were going on, the Kardashian family was maybe in the press more than ever before. Kimye got engaged back in October 2013 and wedding furor roared until they actually said “I do” in May. Kendall didn’t seem to sweat through any of it, showing off perfect model-off-duty style and hosting her first awards show.
But I get it: Evolving into your career and adulthood is tricky, no matter the circumstances. The Love story also quoted Kim vouching for Kendall’s work ethic. “She has proven that she is the real deal. Her hard work paid off, and that makes me so proud.” She’d evidently check in with Kendall, asking if her little sis would want her to come to the shows she was walking in or would rather she stay far, far away.
“Kim was invited to a lot of the shows that I was in. She called me before and was like, ‘Hey, I was invited to the show. I just wanted to let you know. Do you want me to come?’ and I was like, ‘No.'”
When we’re talking Chanel couture, I’d like to say, for the record, that is a very good sister.
