It’s almost back-to-school season, and even if you can’t remember the last time you sat in a classroom, it’s about time we discussed the varsity stripe.
A varsity stripe comes from the idea of a school jacket, emblazoned with a school’s letter (the letterman jacket). With one or two bold, contrasting stripes on a garment, designers’ latest looks are reminiscent of a sports uniform (but much more chic, of course!). The great thing about this trend is that it’s sporty in an understated way. And, yes, it’s a new way to wear our beloved stripes. Though I love every type of stripe, it’s refreshing that the varsity stripe adds a vivid dimension to any garment without feeling overwhelming.
Resort 2015 collections proved that the varsity stripe doesn’t have to stop there. Nonoo, Tibi, and Jil Sander Navy are just among some of the presentations that featured this striped accent in unexpected ways on dresses, skirts, and coats.
