The 6 Summer 2014 Fashion Trends We Can’t WAIT To Say Goodbye To

Summer fashion staples are a good thing—coming back to the perfect pair of cutoffs or flat leather sandals year after year feels so right, like being reunited with a best friend you haven’t seen in a while. Each season gets peppered with its own trends, and, much like new people you meet, they’re all over the place. Some have long-term potential, some are fun for the moment, and, goodness, some you just want to go away. Right now.

1. Jeans with huge, skin-exposing holes from thigh to shin. I love destroyed denim, but try as I might, I couldn’t get behind this one. On the practical level, they don’t make any sense, and they’re just not flattering to the leg. You never could’ve gotten these kind of holes naturally.

2. Crop tops with tiny bottoms. The crop top has staying power, for casual events and formal functions, which I’m more than OK with. But it’s done dirty when paired with itsy-bitsy shorts or micro-minis so that observers are wondering which is smaller: the top or the bottom?

3. Maxis with minis. It’s a maxi but a mini, with sheer fabric extending to the floor and revealing a miniskirt underneath. The allure of the see-through cover is fun, but the biggest issue is that almost every covered-up mini is short. Like, if it were on its own, it couldn’t pass muster.

4. ’90s-influenced fashion. Don’t get me wrong—I could wax nostalgic all day long about the decade, but it doesn’t really inspire a whole lot of great fashion. Its blandness came back this summer by way of normcore (no more, please!) but also chokers and ditsy daisy prints.

5. Bold leggings as pants. This was one of those festival fashion moments that has stylishly scarred me. I think we can all agree that there are some ground rules for wearing leggings as pants: The material has to be thick, worn with a longer top that hits no higher than the hip bone, and done in a dark color—a.k.a. no brightly printed slices of pizzas or adorable kittens.

6. Unflattering cutoffs. This one has been going for a few years, but can we all work together to put an end to it before 2015 rolls around? Cutoffs are awesome, yes, but they should be comfy to wear. They shouldn’t look like boy-short underwear.
