The Queen of Pop turned 56, and there’s no time like a birthday to celebrate what someone’s done for fashion trends the world over. There’s the cone bra, sure, but also flouncy lace skirts, tied-up headbands, and armful of bangles. Before we got into the plaid miniskirts and wristlets of our later years, there were a whole lot of Madonna-inspired moments haunting many an elementary-school hallway.
#1. Stacked bangles and neon.
Circa first grade, I doubt I knew exactly who Madonna was, but my closet definitely did. Lots and lots of bangles and brights? All about it.
#2. Lace and pearls.
Madonna’s schtick is firmly rooted in the sex-appeal thing, and she totally paved the way for future pop-tart ladies like Britney and Cristina. The fluffy slip, lace gloves, and ropes of pearls constituted many a Halloween costume if you remember.
#3. Floppy headbands and parachute pants.
With pal Rosanna Arquette, looks like this segued us right into the ’90s. Younger me tied a lot of scarves into wide headbands, and those pants were enough to tempt us out of girly skirts and dresses.
