You can never go wrong with black and white photography: there is an unfailing elegance to it. Same goes for Winona Ryder, a doe-eyed beauty who we know and love for critically acclaimed movies such as Girl, Interrupted, Reality Bites and Black Swan. The 42-year-old (yet never-ageing) actress has been rocking blazers and menswear-inspired pieces over the years, making her a perfect match to fill the role of the new Rag & Bone fall ad campaign’s protagonista. A great comeback for Winona, who hasn’t fronted any major fashion campaigns since 2003.
The shoot was set in New York’s Coney Island and lensed by Glen Luchford, known for his distinctly dark and retro-ish style, which was obviously conveyed in the campaign images as well. Winona Ryder, along with her photoshoot partner, Michael Pitt, is captured having typical ConeyIsland kind of fun, playing the machines and making faces in the photo booth. Art direction on the shoot was taken care of by Peter Miles with hair by Duffy and make-up/grooming by Gucci Westman.
The managing partner of Rag & Bone, Marcus Wainwright, named Ryder’s ‘beautiful, timeless quality’ as the main reason the designer label has set its eyes on her. He said: ‘To us, Winona Ryder is a bona-fide icon. One of the things that makes her so cool is that although she has this incredible career, she isn’t interested in being a movie star.’
And when it comes to Michael Pitt, there is barely any explanation needed, is there?
