The Emmy Awards came around just in time to break up a lazy end-of-summer vibe that’s, personally, been more about comfy day dresses and cutoffs instead of glamorous gowns. It was a mighty jolt of red carpet glam too, with divine style moments from Kerry Washington, Lena Dunham, and so, so much red!
We all know that Heidi can rock a sexy evening gown like nobody’s business, and, yeah, if you’ve got it, flaunt it. Still, I adored this more reserved Zac Posen pick on her. She’s breathtaking, obv, and as it draped down the back pooled gorgeously around her feet.
The classic shape of this siren-red Prabal Gurung dress was made even more intriguing thanks to a subtle pattern and black piping that cut in at the waist. My favorite part? The raised hemline in front that showed off some sexy strappy sandals.
It was another sleek silhouette for Lady Mary, who picked a tricolor Rosie Assoulin halter style with pretty pleating at the waist and layered folds at the side. Kind of like the chicest origami ever, right?
Let’s be real: if Kerry Washington wore orange all the time, I wouldn’t be mad at her. This bright Prada number had a front slit that opened up to show off a sparkly miniskirt. Saucy! Additional shine came courtesy of Fred Leighton.
I still haven’t adjusted to Lena’s platinum hair (wow!), but I think this is my favorite look of hers, ever (it’s Giambattista Valli). The frothy skirt, the slightly bookish blouse tucked in, and the flattering pale pink contrasted against the poppy fruit punch SO. GOOD.
More glamorous red from Claire, whose Givenchy dress had a little bit of everything: slices of lace at the waist, jeweled bows at the neckline, and a ladylike skinny belt.
I’ll admit, I didn’t know Gwen would be there, but I’m so happy she was! She looked stunning in a Versace dress with a sort of T-shirt-style top that was anything but casual thanks to stacked metallic cutouts. Plus, the entire thing was covered in tiny Swarovski crystals!
Note to self: Signal that you’ve arrived as a big-time actress by picking the right dress. I’m still aching with joy over how glamorous and gorgeous this black-and-white Donna Karan Atelier number was.
I love this coral Kenzo pick on Mindy: The halter neckline and geometric sparkle lines combined for a simple Liz Taylor-esque sort of dress that I could see hanging on the rack of the poshest vintage store around.
They say that white is hard to wear on the red carpet, but you wouldn’t know it by looking at the always-sizzling Sofia. Her white column Roberto Cavalli gown had metallic accents that flared out from the waist, perfectly accenting her figure.
