Between all the tailored pantsuits designer bags and proverbial white hats, it would’ve been hard to pick out just one statement style moment from Scandal‘s Olivia Pope. But, y’all, last night’s premiere cemented it. If you haven’t watched yet, this might be a little bit of a *SPOILER*, but we figure out where Olivia’s been early on. After living la vida lovely on a tropical island with Jake, she’s back in D.C. and visiting her old employees, including an arranged meet-up with Abby on the Washington mall. Abby, you see, has taken a job working for the White House and is having all sorts of Olivia Pope moments.
We know because of the obvious montage of her directing White House affairs, but I’m more interested in the fashion symbolism. Ready for some college term-paper-worthy observations?
Out of all the fashion moments we associate with Olivia, it’s her coats that really denote power and a major take-charge ability. Abby strides up wearing a deep burgundy wrap coat similar to so many that O.P.’s worn before, but look how much sharper Abby’s coat is. The arms look more tailored and fitted too, IMO.
Olivia’s got one on too, but this time it’s white with a tinge of gray, almost as if she’s lost some of her luster and standing (which, walking through her closed-up office, it’s obvious she has). Even the fit of it and the tie of the belt is a little sloppier than Abby’s—it’s like I’m getting a tiny bathrobe vibe.
