Dressing for holiday parties becomes a big part of December, and while cocktails with your girlfriends are easy enough to navigate (just throw on some sparkles and you’re set), the office party is a bit trickier. For expert guidance, I connected with Marchesa designer Georgina Chapman to ask exactly how she approaches the season, including being the plus-one at her husband Harvey Weinstein’s work events.
For your significant other’s office party:
“Normally I always talk to my husband and get his call on it. That’s one of the few times I’ll be like, ‘Darling, what do you think?’ Normally, [it’s] ‘You know what, this is not your department.’ If it’s their event and you want to be appropriate and want them to be comfortable, I’d ask.”
For your holiday party:
For an engagement with your friends and coworkers, she supports a theory of pretty much wearing whatever you want. “I think the trick is to feel comfortable. If you feel good in what you’re wearing, you’ll exude confidence, and there’s nothing more attractive than a woman that feels good in what she’s in.” If you work in a buttoned-up office, resort to special accessories to liven up your look. “Get a really great pair of statement earrings or a necklace or jeweled evening bag. Even if it’s a pair of trousers and a shirt, make it special with accessories.”
For her holiday party:
“I’m Marchesa, so maybe we’re slightly different with our office party. It’s all glamorous with us.” At home with family, get-togethers mix high-fashion with, surprisingly, bare feet. “My mother was always very glamorous so we always did dress. The only thing I wouldn’t ever wear is shoes because I’m always running around after children. I’d definitely do my makeup and hair, but I’d always be barefoot.”
I got the chance to talk party with Georgina while I was spending some time with Canon and checking out their latest cameras. I’d never call myself a photographer, but how pretty are these close-up shots I got of some of the label’s dresses? (I shot with a Canon EOS Rebel SL1.) I was in heaven.
