See What This Year’s Oscar Nominees Wore to Their First Academy Awards Ceremony (Like Meryl Streep in 1979!)

This year’s Oscar nominations were revealed this morning and you just know that an entire set of elite Hollywood stylists is now scrambling to figure out what each lady will wear. With the awards happening late next month, we’ll have plenty of time for predictions, but for now, I want to dive into what the nominees wore on their first Oscars carpet.

Nominees for Best Actress
Julianne Moore’s become one of my current favorites to watch on the red carpet, so this snap from the 1998 ceremony totally surprised me. Her current picks are usually sexy and avant-garde, nothing like this simple (and shapeless) dress and shawl combo.

Reese Witherspoon looked like a total baby back in 2002, right? So sweet! There was a strong vintage feeling to this entire look, something she doesn’t do a lot now on carpets.

Rosamund Pike was on the scene back in 2006, and her golden dress wouldn’t look so out of place now. Love that color on her!

I was actually shocked to see that this was Marion Cotillard’s Oscar dress back in 2008. It feels like just yesterday she topped best-dressed lists in it, and it’s still just as jaw-dropping now.

Meanwhile, Felicity Jones is such a rising starlet I don’t think she’s ever actually attended the Academy Awards! Instead, I grabbed this pic of her in a black tulle number from the Orange British Academy Film Awards in 2011. She’s a total current style star, so it feels especially adorable to see her wearing something a little more juvenile.

Nominees for Best Supporting Actress
OMG, Meryl Streep! I’m actually kind of obsessed with the easy ’70s glamour of this snap (from the 1979 ceremony!) and think she looks just like her daughters.

Laura Dern’s first Oscars was back in 1996, and she was rocking fashion staples for the decade: a simple, satin gown and matching purse. Also: Hi, Jeff Goldblum!

Looking like the biggest babe back in 1996 was Patricia Arquette. The simple lines of her dress make it timeless—you wouldn’t bat an eyelash if someone wore it next month.

For her first Oscar trip in 2006, Keira Knightley picked this ruched gown with a mega mermaid bottom. It’s pretty but so far from her current style!

Emma Stone made her Academy Awards debut in 2012, and I love this cherry red Giambattista Valli just as much as I did then. It was a strong start, and she’s kept impressing me ever since.
