At the 4th of July TOS gallery launched her couture collection: ‘Ensemble’. This collection, which underlines the power of diversity, was exhibited at Atelier Néerlandais in Paris. Ensemble is the first couture collection by TOS gallery.
Last Wednesday TOS gallery presented her first couture collection as a stylish exhibition supported by a light installation by Daniel Acutt, planetary artworks by Corine van Voorbergen and an enchanting soundscape by Global Music Branding. The exhibition concept was to experience the collection as being an independent universe, where the impressive couture pieces were presented as levitating celestial bodies.
The contradictions between raw denim and refined ‘broderie d’art’, the contrast of chunky knit and sparkling jacquards, large volumes in proportion to fine closures together represent what Tosca Soraya Otten, the founder of TOS gallery, wants to say with this collection: Differences between people, materials, environments and planets underline that what makes the ‘other’ so special. By seeing and acknowledging differences, we experience strength and enrichment.
Last year TOS gallery created the first demi-couture line ‘The Phoenix Series’. This year Otten challenged herself a bit further and she designed her first couture collection ‘Ensemble’. This collection takes us to an enchanting world with astronomical characteristics and colours. We find this in the form of star clusters strapped to waistbands and trims, as well as in the sparkling yarns processed in celestial jacquard. The silhouettes remind one of Oriental dressing as well as classical couture. Ensemble presents interesting volumes and delicate materials that are carefully folded around the body, as origami.
Stories, not Seasons
Otten about the collection: “I’ve always been fascinated by the universe, the mystery of it and the balance it maintains. Also on our planet you find a balance between contradicting elements. This balance is the inspiration for the Ensemble collection. On that note, the current balance in the fashion industry is completely unbalanced. With my label I want to design focussed on quality and consciousness and to not take part in fast fashion and mass production. Stories, not seasons is the vision for all the decisions I take with my company. The (fashion) world needs more stories, passion and artisans.”
