Cannes 2013: Nicole Kidman and Ang Lee on jury

Cannes 2013 jury chair Steven Spielberg will be joined by Nicole Kidman and Ang Lee at this year’s festival.

The jury line up for this year’s Cannes festival includes Nicole Kidman, and Oscar winners director Ang Lee and actor Christoph Waltz.

The panel, which is chaired by Steven Spielberg, will decide which film wins the coveted Palme d’Or prize at the 66th festival.

Contenders in the main film category include Steven Soderbergh’s Behind the Candelabra and Only God Forgives, starring Ryan Gosling.

Kidman returns to Cannes as after appearing in The Paperboy, which was poorly received at the festival last year. Scottish filmmaker Lynne Ramsay, whose film We Need To Talk About Kevin was nominated for the main prize in 2011 and won a youth prize in 2002, is also on the panel.

Three other Cannes prize-winners are on the jury: Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu took the Palme d’Or in 2007, French actor Daniel Auteuil won best actor award in 1996 and the Japanese director Naomi Kawase won the Camera d’Or in 1997 and the Grand Prix in 2007 for her film The Mourning Forest.

The starry jury line-up reflects the talent involved elsewhere in Cannes 2013: the festival is launching with a screening of Baz Luhrman’s film adaptation of The Great Gatsby and a ceremony hosted by French actress Audrey Tautou.
