Rihanna Is Our Glamour Icon of the Week—Check Out Her Ever-Evolving Style!

It’s summer and we feel like celebrating—don’t you? So it seems like the perfect time to kick off the Glamour Icon of the Week. This feature celebrates the style-setters we love and follows their sartorial choices from the early days (hey, we all make mistakes) to the flashbulb-popping people they are today (where did she get that top?). Who better to start with than the custom Givenchy-wearing, wardrobe-malfunction-defying, resident fashion bad girl Rihanna.

In honor of this illustrious title, let’s take a look through the singer’s ever-transforming but constantly mind-blowing style.

When baby-faced Ri Ri first burst onto the scene in 2005, she was channeling more of a Britney Spears circa ’99 vibe than the high-fashion rebel we know now. But her penchant for wearing crop tops and boyfriend jeans was apparent even back then.

Two years later, the momentous angled bob cut changed everything, while launching a gazillion copy cats everywhere (I stand guilty—totally asked my hairdresser for the “Rihanna” that year too). The edgy hairstyle differentiated the songstress from all the others and kicked off an era of style risk-taking—and attention from top designers.

The fashion chameleon couldn’t stick with one look for very long. In 2009, with her blond-streaked pixie-cut styled into a retro-bouffant, Rihanna experimented with a sequined rosette-embellished body suit (sorta J.Lo) and lace-overlay visors (kinda Kanye).

In 2010, Rihanna eased into her rocked-out personal style. She looked amazing in a heather gray bustier by Zambesi and Christian Louboutin heels while matching her Little Mermaid-red curls to her pencil skirt.

While launching her perfume Reb’l Fleur, Rihanna did her crop-top thing—while playfully mixing girly and sexy in a brocade skirt and abbreviated-cardigan ensemble by Prada.

In 2012, the singer elegantly channeled old Hollywood at the Time 100 gala. Rihanna’s ladylike-glam high-low gown by Marchesa had a touch of edge with the twisty hornlike bodice.

At the Grammys in 2012, the singer rocked a Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface-look in a sleek low-cut Armani gown.

At the 2013 Grammy Awards, Rihanna looked stunning in a flowing red custom Azzedine Alaia gown and soft waves. It’s hard to narrow down, but this may be one of my favorite Rihanna looks ever. A hundred percent flawless.

If you couldn’t tell by our constant worshiping on Dressed (Christina loves her blazer-cutoffs-combo, Nikki’s all over her high-high designer mixing, and I think it’s cool how she carries her own chic umbrella ella, ella), Rihanna’s street style is to die for too. Check her out in Paris last month skillfully working a plethora of summer trends: crop top, white blazer, statement sunnies, and tricked-out commuter shoes with a skirt.

And to close out this list, it’s only fitting to show Ri Ri at her best—ruling the stage in her insanely regal custom Givenchy outfit. Maybe you’re lucky enough to catch the singer live on her Diamonds world tour this summer—otherwise, let’s just take a moment to take this all in. Ahhhhhh.
