Weeks ago, the lovely Aussie actress Penelope Mitchell from Netflix’s Hemlock Grove stopped by for an office visit. Looking fab in a thrift store frock, I couldn’t help but ask her to model for us some of her favorite vintage pieces from her closet. She tells me her vintage obsession comes “partly out of necessity, because I don’t have much money, but also because of the history. I love putting on clothes that have had a past life.” Penelope describes her style as “whimsical, yet pragmatic,” and jokes that she’s someone “who wears cashmere, but with practical shoes.” Here, 3 outfit ideas, courtesy of Penelope!
Where she scours for vintage: “My hometown of Melbourne has some wonderful thrift stores. It’s a big part of our culture. We call them opp-shops back there, bit of trivia for you!”
The look: While on her friend Kate’s bike in her hometown of Melbourne, Penelope rides around in Ralph Lauren glasses and a vintage romper from Ragg Mop Vintage in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles. The romper is key for chic and easy riding.
Her new thrift store find in California: “I’m still new to the US, but my favorite store, hands down, is Playclothes in Burbank. The ladies there are like family now, they always take such great care of me. Last time I went in they showed me pictures of the woman who had owned my garment in the 1950s. It was insane. Hollywood is wild like that!”
The look: Caught on her way to a meeting, Penelope wears an Arabella Ramsay top, vintage shorts from St. Vincent De Paul thrift shop Melbourne, a vintage Moschino belt from Creamy Velvet Melbourne,
Dries Van Noten heels from Decades Los Angeles and Chanel glasses.
Her secret shopping weapon: “My mother is the most stylish and creative person I know. She spent a lot of time in Paris in her youth, so she has a sixth sense for envisioning how things will look on. She still sends me things in the mail and they always fit perfectly. It’s uncanny! We spent a lot of time digging through fripperies (French for thrift shops) in the Marais when I was younger, playing dress up.”
The look: Penelope wears her mom’s blouse and vintage silk Max Mara culottes. She breaks up the all-white look with a black belt to draw attention to her waistline and give the outfit a good shape.
Hemlock Grove, which garnered two Emmy noms yesterday for Original Theme Music and Special Visual Effects, will premiere its second season in 2014. And if you haven’t already, you can watch season one on Netflix now!
